The truth is, we all want that fabulous bright blonde that looks shiny and healthy. Purple hair products are a great way to maintain that beautiful colour you got at the salon to keep it looking fresh and vibrant!
HOW DO PURPLE HAIR PRODUCTS WORK
Purple hair products are infused with violet tones that are used to neutralize any warmth in the form of yellow, brassy tones. Imagine the colour wheel, purple sits opposite of yellow, so it perfectly cancels out any of the unwanted yellow tones you may be seeing in your hair.
Keep in mind that purple hair products will not do the best job at cancelling out orange tones. They work best on hair that has a yellow undertone to it.
For example, if you have a deep brown hair colour with some soft caramel highlighted areas and are looking to achieve brighter highlights, a purple shampoo will not be the answer for you. If you’re looking to be lighter then your only option is to lift the colour with a bleach treatment at the salon. You can also book in for a refresh toner which is a great way to cancel out any orange tones you may be seeing in your hair.
A common misconception about Purple hair products is that they can make your hair lighter. This is false. Purple hair products cannot lift colour. They will cancel out yellow tones which will make the hair appear brighter and are generally the most beneficial on hair that is a level 9 or higher in most cases.
HOW TO USE PURPLE HAIR PRODUCTS
The most common purple hair product that you will hear about is Purple Shampoo. But there are many other options to use like hair masks, conditioners, styling products and even brightening powders.
How often you use these products will depend on your hair and what you are looking to achieve. In most cases, I recommend using a purple hair product once every 1-3 weeks to refresh your blonde. Purple shampoos should not replace your regular shampoo, but should be an additional product added in to your routine.
Keep in mind, when these types of products are over used it can almost create the opposite affect of what they are meant for. Instead of “brightening” they can give off a “dull” grey tone with uneven saturation. If this ends up happening, I recommend using a clarifying shampoo to remove any unwanted pigment that was transferred into the hair for an easy fix!

DRYBAR BLONDE ALE BRIGHTENING SHAMPOO
The Drybar Blonde Ale Brightening Shampoo is my go to! It is my current favourite for so many reasons and I always find myself reaching for this product every time I need a little refresh on my hair!
This shampoo is extremely pigmented and cleanses without stripping out all of the moisture in my hair. Honestly, I was shocked at how soft and shiny my hair was after I used it for the first time. It also contains Keratin, which is great because it helps keep the hair strong and healthy.
My hair appears bright and looks like I just got a fresh colour every time I use it! This shampoo also lathers extremely well so you only need a small about of product which I love because I don’t have to repurchase it as often.
DRYBAR BLONDE ALE BRIGHTENING CONDITIONER
I always follow the Drybar Blonde Ale Brightening Shampoo with the Drybar Blonde Ale Brightening Conditioner. This product is light purple in colour and seals in the perfect vibrant blonde tone that I love so much. I usually leave this conditioner in my hair for at least 10 minutes before rinsing it out. It is very light weight so my hair feels nice and bouncy after I blow-dry it while still loading my hair up with moisture!
My hair always feels very strong and healthy after I use this product and I will continue to repurchase it over and over!
Before I started using this conditioner, I was using the Evo Fabuloso Platinum Blonde Conditioner which is also another fabulous product!
LIVING PROOF COLOUR CARE WHIPPED GLAZE
Okay the Living Proof Colour Care Whipped Glaze is amazing! This is a styling mouse that I run through my hair before I blow-dry it. It has a feather light feel and makes my hair feel incredibly soft!
This styling product is a great addition to add to your routine if you’re looking for a subtle brightening effect. It has a light purple tone and leaves my hair looking soft, shiny and bright every time I use it! It’s the perfect pick me up to use once a week for a little refresh without being too intense!
Overall, Purple hair products are a great addition to your hair care routine if you have any blonde that needs a little refresh to amp up the vibrancy!
