Don’t you just love leaving the salon with the softest, most fabulous smelling hair possible!? Thinking to yourself, wow I really need to get my hands on these hair products… to then get blown away by the outrageous prices. Yeah we’ve all been there!
So, is there really a difference between salon and drugstore hair products??
Today I am laying it all on the line to help you decide if salon or drugstore hair products are the right choice for you.
Salon vs Drugstore Hair Products
First things first, the most obvious difference between salon and drugstore hair products is definitely the price tag. Although, often times most salon and drugstore products contain very similar ingredients… so is there really much of a difference??
Let’s start with the lowdown on Drugstore Hair Products:
Drugstore products tend to be a lot more appealing for the convenience of being able to purchase them anywhere from the drugstore to the grocery store and of course the affordability. What most people don’t realize, is what makes these products so affordable is actually the reason why they may not be so good for your hair.
The truth is, in order for drugstore products to be sold in mass quantities at a low price, the ingredients are altered to dilute the product. They contain “fillers” which can include chemicals, waxes and water. These fillers (sulfates being one of the most common chemicals) often leave your hair feeling soft and luxurious… although this luxurious feeling is most likely just a build up of waxes and fillers on each hair strand. This buildup of product can actually strip the hair of moisture, colour and even cause breakage over time.
And then there are Salon Hair Products:
Salon products on the other hand are highly concentrated with good quality ingredients. This is the number one reason why they are so much more expensive.
Despite the unfortunate high price tag, you actually end up using less product due to the high concentration of good quality ingredients so your products will last a lot longer. Personally, in my experience I have found that salon products last much longer than drugstore products because you can use a lot less to get fabulous feeling hair!
The Conclusion
The bottom line is, everyone’s hair has different needs so you will need to choose products that will work best for you. If you invest in good quality ingredients, your hair will feel healthy and beautiful.
Both drugstore products and salon products contain very similar ingredients. You just have to keep in mind that drugstore products will have a much lower concentration of these ingredients. I recommend always reading the label and avoiding products with high levels of chemicals and other harmful ingredients.
A high price tag doesn’t always mean that the products are “better”. In my opinion, the best products are the ones with good quality ingredients that will satisfy the needs of your hair.
